At Avacado Money, we’re taking back what rightfully belongs to each and every young Australian: financial literacy and sound money management. (And the positive image of avocados, but that’s another story).
“When I was buying my first home, I wasn’t buying smashed Avocados for nineteen bucks,” Property tycoon Tim Gurner told Sixty Minutes in a now infamous interview.
“Young people order smashed avocado with crumbled feta on five-grain toasted bread at $22 a pop and more … how can [they] afford to eat like this?” pondered Bernard Salt, Baby Boomber Collumnist for The Australian.
For far too long the humble avocado has been a symbol of an intergenerational money war between young Australians and older generations.
Because young Australians deserve to understand their money, and eat as many goldarned avocados as they like.
You can buy a house and eat at hipster cafes. It may not be easy, but it starts with understanding your money. That’s where we can help.
Hell, if you want to slurp avocado margaritas in the Maldives somewhere during retirement, you can do that too. But first you’ll need to understand scary, adult-sounding words like dividends or … superannuation.
These words aren’t as bad as they sound. Avacado Money will explain them, and much more with the three content pillars:
- Financial Literacy
- Managing Money
- Making Money
A unique perspective
There are dozens of money blogs out there. While some lack quality and honesty, majority are not for Australian students. Avacado Money will focus its content within an Australian social and economic context through:
- Transparency
- In-depth research
- High quality posts
There’s already a whirlpool of financial content for students online, but we’re not here for cheap listicles. *Cough* … Eighty-eight ways to make money online – number 7 will shock you!
Avacado… don’t you mean avocado?
This blog started as a University assignment and is fuelled by my unrivalled passion for personal finance.
I was hunched over my laptop one night at the library – soy latte in hand – and decided on the tongue-in-cheek name avocado money.
Of course, WordPress doesn’t have an in-built spellchecker, and so Avacado Money was born. But it worked out because apparently no one has though to use the social media handle @avacadomoney before – awesome!
I have spent countless hours researching topics including investing, saving, tax returns, and more. I have helped friends and family pay off debt quicker, and strive to help others be financially independent and realise their worth.
Outside of this blog, I study a Bachelor of Journalism and Professional Writing with a sub-major in Social Media at the University of South Australia.
I have worked behind bars and coffee machines for the past 4 years and currently work two different hospitality jobs.
My other hobbies include writing, reading, viticulture, travel, sustainability, finance, photography, and mixology – I can shake a mean martini!
